About the Author

Framton Nuttel goes to the countryside to rest his nerves, as advised by his doctors. His sister has given him letters of introduction to meet some people there, so he doesn’t feel lonely.
He visits Mrs. Sappleton’s house, where he first meets her niece, a 15-year-old girl named Vera. Since Mrs. Sappleton is not in the room yet, Vera starts talking to Framton. She asks him if he knows anything about her aunt. When he says no, she tells him a sad story.
Vera says that three years ago, Mrs. Sappleton’s husband and two younger brothers went out through the large open window for hunting and never came back. They died in a bog (a muddy swamp), and their bodies were never found. But her aunt refuses to believe they’re dead, so she keeps the window open, hoping they will return.
Just then, Mrs. Sappleton enters the room and talks happily about her husband and brothers coming home soon from shooting. Framton thinks she is mentally disturbed and gets very nervous.
Suddenly, they see three men and a dog walking across the lawn toward the open window—just like in Vera’s story. One of the men even sings the same line Vera had mentioned:
